Neither is ready for international prime time, in my humble opinion.

Google has the goods on satellite photos of Makassar, Indonesia; but no details on roads, place names, etc. etc.

Virtual Earth totally knows where Makassar is, but the satellite photo sucks, and the interface won't allow zooming in past the halfway point.

You are aware that neither Google nor Microsoft actually takes the pictures, right?

:)

But they do get to choose what they want when they buy them.

They take the latest available. Talk to ESRI (http://www.esri.com/) about getting better images...

Are Ujung Pandang and Makassar the same thing?

Also, Celebes looks like a giant "K" (for "Kearns"?).

Oh, yeah.

Makassar changed it's name to Ujung Pandang a while back, and then a few years ago changed it's name back to Makassar.

And it's Sulawesi now, and has been for quite a while, not Celebes. (I think that ended in '45 when the Dutch left)

Though tea from Sulawesi is still called "Celebes"...

Hmm ... my National Geographic map from 2004 still has the colonial name ... weird.
